Shore Safari

Exploration of life on the shore
Category:  Learning & Education  Natural Environment

Starts: Wednesday, June 16, 2010

Join members of Coastwise North Devon, the award-winning local group, to explore the marine wilderness on your doorstep. From anemones to sea hares, crabs to cowries, you will be amazed at what you can find with a little help. Suggested wear: old weather-proof clothes and wellies or equivalent. Children must be accompanied.

Barricane and the adjoining Coombesgate beaches offer plenty of accessible rock-pools and gullies rich in life. See how many different anemones you can find. Look out for extraordinary sea hares come ashore to mate and lay their eggs. Scour the rocks for cowries feeding amidst the turf of plants and animals that supports a mass of sea snails, barnacles, mussels, crabs and small fish. And keep a look-out for the unexpected, the shore is full of surprises.

Coastwise North Devon is a community group dedicated to championing North Devon’s exceptional coast and seas. Proud to be part of the Biosphere Partnership, Coastwise members have received support from the AONB’s Sustainable Development Fund to develop shore safaris.
