Category:  Sport & Leisure  Natural Environment  Visual Arts & Literature

Starts: Saturday, June 12, 2010

THIS WALK IS NOW FULLY BOOKED - BUT THERE ARE STILL PLACES STILL AVAILABLE ON THE OTHER WALKS.

An enjoyable and creative workshop on Northam Burrows, with its wonderfully diverse landscape – its pebble ridge, beaches, sand dunes and grassland - not to mention fantastic views of the Atlantic and across the wide sweep of Bideford Bay.

Northam Burrows is special, not only for its inspirational landscape and views - it is also highly important for wildlife. It lies within the North Devon Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty, an integral part of the North Devon UNESCO Biosphere Reserve - and, largely because of its wide range of habitats and rare plants, is also an SSSI (Site of Special Scientific Interest).

Linda will lead the walk at a leisurely pace, covering approximately 2 miles in 3 hours, so that we can stop, look and listen closely, involving ourselves in the intricacies of this unique coastal landscape. The emphasis will be on connecting and responding spontaneously to our surroundings, using all of our senses.
It is a journey of exploration and discovery.

It is suitable for all abilities, from absolute beginners to advanced artists, and is designed mainly for adults, though accompanied young people over 12 are most welcome.
Bring along anything you think you might need, such as a camera, sketchbook, or writing materials… or just come empty-handed and perhaps make small works with stone, sand, driftwood or other materials found along the beach.
With your permission, your work and photos will be copied, and may be exhibited at local information centres for all to enjoy.

There is also the Essential Nature website and blog (www.essentialnature.org.uk) where you can contribute pictures, stories, blog posts, poetry and other creative work.

Later on, in the autumn, there will be a full-scale exhibition at Barnstaple Library Foyer, so Linda will be requesting all your best work!

Access
This is easy walking - perhaps more aptly described as a gentle wander - though not, unfortunately, suitable for wheelchairs or prams. There is a small amount of clambering over pebbles and sand dunes. However, the paths leading to the Burrows Centre are fully accessible, and there is a good car-parking area nearby. There are also toilets - including one especially designed for people with prams, pushchairs and wheelchairs. For further information about Northam Burrows and the Burrows Centre, please see http://www.torridge.gov.uk. You will find Northam Burrows on the page titled 'Leisure'.

Travel Directions
For walkers, Northam Burrows is on the South West Coast Path. National Grid Ref: SS440 309. By bus - taking the No. 21 bus, the nearest bus stop is at Sandymere Road, a request stop immediately after Northam Square. Continue walking along Sandymere Road to the Burrows entrance - then straight ahead to the large car park by the sea front. Turn right here, and continue until you come to the Burrows Centre. It is about 20 mins walk from the bus stop. Entrance to the Northam Burrows is free. However, there is a small toll charge for cars at the entrance.
